    Frequently Asked Questions:

Q/ Is this unit based on Linux and NTP ?
A/ No the hardware and code running it are completely propriety and don’t use any source code from Linux or NTP. This is done to ensure maximum performance with no overheads and security issues.

    Q/ Can I configure it via HTTP/Telnet ?
A/ No. Running a web server on this device although entirely possible would reduce the performance of the unit. Therefore we took the decision to just do configuration via the front panel.

Q/ The performance figures look too good to be true at the price
A/ The performance figures are the result of a focused determination to get the best performance out of the hardware. By not using off the shelf hardware and software we have no overheads or compromises. Try it yourself using Miroslav Lichvar's ntpperf tool.

It only starts to drop when the 100Mb interface is maxed out:

Q/ Can the unit be firmware updated?
A/ Yes via USB into a Windows PC or Mac. Updates take about 5 seconds to apply.

Q/ Is the BNC output compatible with the Airspy
A/ Yes. Set the BNC output to 10Mhz. Connect the unit to your Airspy via the optional BNC to MCX cable and power the Airspy on.

Q/ Can the unit display my local time ?
A/ Yes. Press the button on the clock screen and use the knob to select your time zone.

Q/ Whats the maximum length of coax to the antenna ?
A/ This depends on the antenna and coax. We've tested our timing antenna (comes with 10 meters of coax) with a 20 meter extension and it works fine. The unit is POE so it may be easier to run a network cable closer to the antenna and install the unit there.

Q/ Does the unit support IPv6
A/ Not currently its in the pipeline and will be available to all units on release via firmware update.

Q/ What happens on loss of GPS Signal
A/ The unit enters failover mode which uses internal compensation to maintain the accuracy of the timing to 1-4ms typically over 24 hours. After 24 hours with no GPS signal the unit reverts to being a Stratum 16 time source.

    Q/ Leap Second Support
A/ The unit has leap second support and a count down timer to the next leap second insertion.

  • Raspberry Pi+ GPS Expansion Board

    0 out of 5

This is an GPS expansion board designed specifically for the both the version 1,2 and 3 Raspberry Pi+ Models.

This board is designed for applications that use a GPS connected via the serial ports to the Raspberry Pi such as timing applications or general applications that require GPS information. To facilitate PPS the time pulse output is connected to a GPIO so you can utilize this board to give NTP PPS discipline. PPS does not work without an antenna.

This board is equipped with the latest Ublox MAX-M8Q positioning module and high quality filtering capacitors and inductors throughout. The MAX-M8Q features a RTC Crystal, very low power usage and high performance. Although not a true timing module it is more than adequate for a Pi based NTP Server. Its worth noting the module can, with a serial command, be placed in “Stationary” dynamic mode which is the default mode for the much more expensive timing modules.

The board features an SMA connector for an active patch antenna (see related products) power and PPS LED's. On the top is a super capacitor which can be used to retain any custom settings in the event of power loss (If the module is commanded to do so ). The MAX-M8Q is connected via serial to the Pi and the PPS is connected to GPIO18 (pin 12).

A 2×20 way header is supplied and 2 suitable standoffs providing a very robust solution. The board follows Raspberry Pi's HAT physical layout with camera and display port notches. It is possible to stack additional HAT's on top of this board with the stacking header.

To use this board to make a Stratum 1 NTP Server please follow these instructions here : http://ava.upuaut.net/?p=726
